From Daguerreotypes to Digital: Photography in Egyptology Talk by John and Colleen Darnell

Around 1840, the first photographs were taken in Egypt, and early daguerrotypes, calotypes, and wet plate photographs are important records of Egyptian monuments.

The lecture will present an overview of the use of photography in Egyptology, including photographs as bases for epigraphic drawings. Then, they will discuss how modern digital photography and 3D modeling is transforming the recording of ancient rock art and inscriptions.

The documentary is an autobiography of Fathalla Mahrous, beginning in the forties and intersecting with many historical events. During the film, Mahrous tells his life story beginning with his childhood in Alexandria -- where his family migrated from Upper Egypt in the thirties -- his work in a factory as a child, and then his life as syndicate member and leftist in the fifties. The latter event was the beginning of an era of changes and transformation in both his personal life and in the public arena.
