Photopia Cairo is pleased to announce the 12 photographers selected to participate in “The Language of Photojournalism,” a year-long educational programme developed in partnership with Danmarks Medie- og Journalisthøjskole (DMJX) and supported by the Embassy of Denmark in Cairo.

Following an open call that received 91 applications from photographers across Egypt, a jury from DMJX and Photopia Cairo selected twelve emerging photographers to take part in this intensive programme, which will run throughout 2026 in Cairo.

About the Programme

“The Language of Photojournalism” aims to strengthen the visual storytelling skills of Egyptian photographers and introduce participants to the professional practices, ethics, and methodologies that shape contemporary photojournalism.

Over the course of the year, the selected participants will engage in four intensive workshops, each focusing on a key dimension of the craft. Between workshops, participants will develop individual assignments and a major documentary project, receiving personalized mentorship and editorial guidance from the programme’s instructors.

The programme will culminate in a collective publication, presenting the participants’ final stories and visual essays.

Programme Structure

The educational programme will unfold through the following workshops:

  • May — PortraitureLed by Mads Greve, focusing on portraiture as a narrative tool within documentary practice.

  • June — Photojournalistic MethodLed by Søren Pagter, introducing participants to the methodology, ethics, and workflow of professional photojournalism.

  • August — Written JournalismLed by Gitte Luk, exploring the relationship between text and image in visual storytelling.

  • October / November — Final Editing & Visual StorytellingLed by Gitte Luk and Søren Pagter, focusing on editing, sequencing, and preparing the final projects for publication and exhibition.

Final Publication

At the conclusion of the programme, the participants’ stories will be compiled into a collective magazine, which will be published online on the DMJX Photojournalism platform. Selected spreads from the magazine will also be exhibited in Cairo, offering audiences the opportunity to engage with the photographers’ work in a physical exhibition setting.

Through this collaboration with DMJX and the Embassy of Denmark in Cairo, Photopia Cairo continues its commitment to supporting the development of visual storytellers in Egypt and fostering meaningful international exchange in the field of photography and journalism.

The programme marks an important step in building new opportunities for photographers to develop long-form documentary work and engage critically with the language of photojournalism.
